Met Office IASI monitoring

Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer

IASI is a Michelson interferometer with a spectral range in the Infrared of 15.5 to 3.62 microns. It has 8461 channels, which is significantly more than any instrument we have used for NWP so far and presents new problems in data storage and channel selection.

However, the science behind the assimilation of IASI observations into the Met Office global model has already been proven with AIRS data, which has been assimilated at the Met Office since Spring 2004. IASI observations are treated in a similar way to AIRS observations, providing information on the temperature and humidity structure of the atmosphere in the analysis.
